Marine Stewardship Council 20th Anniversary

The Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) celebrates its 20th anniversary this March, marking a huge industry benchmark for sustainable fishing practices. Founded in 1997, The MSC is an international non-profit organization that strives to preserve the oceans for future generations. By promoting sustainable fishing practices for a range of species like tuna, crab, salmon, and more the MSC works to safeguard seafood supplies for generations to come.

The MSC blue fish label, seen below, is located on seafood packages to signify that the product was sustainably sourced and has been verified by the MSC – an independent organization that sets the most widely recognized standard for sustainable fishing. Sustainable fishing in its simplest form means leaving enough species in the ocean and maintaining species’ habitats to sustain the individual populations. The MSC judges sustainability off of 3 major areas: 1) Are there enough fish for the population to reproduce and stay healthy? 2) Can the ecosystem remain healthy with the amount of fishing in a certain location? 3) Are MSC Partners abiding by all laws and can they adapt to changing circumstances?

Since the inception of MSC, 12% of the world’s fisheries have become MSC certified. This is a huge accomplishment in the span of just 20 years. 12% of global marine wild catch was MSC certified in 2017, double what it was in 2010. These numbers may seem small, but when thought of in relation to just how many fish are caught per year you’ll see that their efforts add up to large change. Over 60 fisheries were in assessment at the end of 2016 to become MSC certified with hundreds more taking steps to be assessed. These efforts mean great safeguards for plentiful fish and healthy oceans for generations to come.

It is important to eat sustainably for many reasons. Not only does it preserve resources for humans, it also helps balance the ocean’s ecosystems and gives other species a greater chance at completing their lifecycle. It also ensures that you know what you’re putting into your body and can feel confident in what your food products’ labels read. With so many MSC certified products to choose from, you can find something that works for even the pickiest of eaters on any budget.

Eating sustainably and buying from MSC certified partners gives you a voice when purchasing. Many communities today rely on the ocean’s resources to survive, not to mention those who will come to rely on it in the future. Buying sustainable says you care about conservation. It makes a difference today, tomorrow, and one hundred tomorrows from now.
